In May 2018, the UK Home Secretary announced a suite of measures to right the wrongs suffered by members of the “Windrush Generation” who have faced difficulties in demonstrating their lawful status in order to access benefits and services in the UK. These measures included a commitment to establish a compensation scheme. The scope of the scheme is not limited to Caribbean nationals. Almost all Commonwealth nationals who arrived in the UK before 1 January 1973 are included, and some people of all nationalities who arrived the UK before 31 December 1988.
The compensation scheme is now open for applications and the full details of the scheme including who is eligible to apply & how it will operate are available on http://www.gov.uk.guidance/windrush-scheme
